Military Tanks - Can You Really Buy One?

Tank for SaleMany military enthusiasts would love to have a tank for themselves, their club, their local VFW or their town.  They represent the defense of our country, its values and way of life by our armed forces, as well as our assistance in keeping the free world free.  Besides that, they are simply awesome to own and drive!  What red-blooded American wouldn’t want to take a spin in one?

The Basics

It is actually easier to find foreign tanks for sale than it is to come by a U.S. military tank, but both are available if you know where to look.  Currently, a wide variety of tanks is available in the U.S.  They date back as far as the Second World War, but many more recent military tanks are available, often at better prices.  If you have the means and the desire, there are certainly military tanks available that will meet your buying goals.

Collectable Models

The selection of military tanks that is available is excellent.  Some collectors want to peruse the market to see what is available.  Others have a budget in mind and want the best tank for the money.  Others are set on a specific model, or perhaps a main battle tank, and won’t be satisfied with anything else.

U.S Military Tanks

M1A2 SEP Abrams main battle tank.

Cadillac-Gage V100 military tanks: Various models are available, most from the Viet Nam era.

Stuart Light Military tanks: A good variety of these can’t be found, including the popular M5A1.

M4A3 Sherman main battle tank.

Foreign Military Tanks

FMC M1113: Made for the Italian army, it’s a version of the U.S. M1113 and was made at the FMC plant in CA.

British FV200 Conqueror Super Heavy Tank: One of the largest tanks ever built at 38’!  Most were built in the ‘50’s.

Russian T-55 Main Battle Tank: It is 35 tons of power!

German Panther Military Tanks: Many of these are available, most from the era of the Second World War.

British Chieftain Military Tanks: An assortment of this main battle tank is available from several eras.

Are they Legal?

The legalities of owning military tanks are pretty clear.  You can own a tank.  Before the U.S. military releases any tank from its inventory it removes all the goodies that would not be safe to have in the hands of who-knows-who.  Owning one is not the problem.  Getting one titled and licensed can be.  Licensing varies from state to state, but most are very clear about what a vehicle must have to be street legal – turn signals, headlights, brake lights, and that sort of thing.

The weight limits will keep many military tanks off the road, but when properly licensed they can be driven on private property or hauled to fairgrounds and other such places where they can be demo’d.  You’ll need to check with your local DMV to find all the answers, but here’s a clue.  Call the tank by its make and model, a Cadillac-Gage V100 for example.  Don’t mention that it’s a tank!

Where to Find Military Tanks

You mean that’s not a tank dealer in your town?  The best place to look for military tanks for sale is online.  Start at eBay, where you can find absolutely anything.  You’ll also find them on the websites of dealers around the country, but virtually all of them advertise their military tanks for sale on eBay as well.
