The CJ Jeep Renegade Guide

Jeep RenegadeThe Jeep Renegade has a special place in the hearts of many Jeep enthusiasts.  And here we are talking about the traditional Jeep Renegade, not the new concept hybrid Jeep Renegade that was introduced in 2008, a car called “totally recyclable” by Jeep.

The old Jeep Renegade was part of the Jeep CJ (Civilian Jeep) series and made its debut in 1971.  More specifically, the Jeep Renegade was part of the Jeep CJ-5 series that also included classic models like the Tuxedo Park Mark III, the Jeep 462 and the Jeep Golden Eagle, as well as the CJ-7 series.

Some of the specs of the CJ-5 Jeep Renegade, which can still be found in excellent condition whether original or restored, include the following:

  • Engine: 232 cu. in. /3.8L AMC 16, 258 cu. in. /4.2L AMC 16, and the 304 cu. in. / 5L AMC V8.
  • Transmission: 3-speed manual and 4-speed manual.
  • Wheelbase: 81” 1970-1971; 83.5” 1972 to 1983.
  • Curb weight: 2,665 lbs.

Jeep Renegade Models

The CJ-5 Jeep Renegade was produced in 3 models during its years of production.  The first was the Jeep Renegade I that was built in 1970 only.  The Jeep Renegade II was only available in 1971 and featured changes made to the entire Jeep CJ-5 lineup including an extended wheelbase.  The third generation Jeep Renegade was offered from 1972 to 1983 and featured several upgrades that served the Renegade line for more than a decade.  They included the beefed up 304 cu. in / 5.0L V8 AMC engine, the Trac-Lok limited slip differential and alloy wheels.

The Jeep CJ-7 also offered a Jeep Renegade version.  Significant features included the optional all-wheel drive Quadra-Trac,  an optional automatic transmission and a V8 engine.

Years of Production

  • The CJ-5 Jeep Renegade was produced in 3 different generations for 14 years, from 1970 to 1983.
  • The CJ-7 Jeep Renegade was produced for 11 years, from 1976 to 1986.

Where to Buy

You can find a Jeep Renegade from many kinds of sellers.  There are enough around that they will occasionally turn up in your local automobile classified ads.  However, the selection will be fairly limited, even if you live in a large metropolitan area.  Better options include searching online at eBay or Jeep websites that specialize in sales of Jeep Renegades and other older Jeep series models.  Most of these dealers offer their inventory on eBay as well, however.

As you search for the right Jeep Renegade, have a basic idea of the year or years you are interested in.  Of course, the engine, transmission and other details will play a large part in that.  Have a basic idea of what you are willing to spend to have the Jeep Renegade in the condition you want it.  If you want to buy one today and drive it tomorrow without doing any work, you’ll need to find one in excellent condition.  If you plan to do the work yourself or expect to pay to have work done on your Jeep Renegade, factor in the cost of parts and labor before you buy.
